New PJ Night
Happy Halloween!
This year for Halloween, Sarah was Tinkerbell and Sam was Yoda. This was the first year that Sarah understood that our neighbors were all giving away candy and she was very eager to get as much as she could. She came home after Beggar's night and counted and recounted her candy. Who knew candy could be so educational? Sam has no clue what Beggar's night is about but was kind enough to wear his costume for a while.
Des Moines has weird traditions of having Beggar's night the night before Halloween and of requiring the kids to tell a joke in order to get the treat. This made for a long night because how many times does one want to hear the same jokes over and over such as 'Why didn't the skeleton cross the street? Because he had no guts!' And then there are the kids who can't remember their joke and they stare at you with that 'deer in the headlights' look. We usually have over 100 kids stop at our house on Beggar's night. It is a nice night for our neighborhood.
When I put Sarah to bed the night of Beggar's night, she asked me when she could go trick or treating by herself. I wasn't really thinking about it, and I said, 'Oh, maybe when you are 10 or 11.' And she said, 'Ok, when I am 10, I am going by myself when I am 10.' She has a very good memory. Now I wished I had said 18.

Not An Obama Mama!
Okay, something that I need to get off my chest. I am not in love with Obama. I don't even get a little bit of excitement towards his campaign. And yes, before you Obama-ites get your knickers in a twist, I will vote for him because no, I do not want four more years of a Republican White House. But I just don't understand the passion that so many of my friends seem to have for him. I find him fairly bland. An intellectual yes, but an abstract, theoretical thinker, the style of a professor (believe me, I know the type) but not necessarily the intellect of someone who knows how to solve everyday, real world problems. Maybe his popularity is a reaction to the low intelligence of the current president, George Bush. Maybe it is Obama supporters way of saying, 'we will no longer accept idiocy in the White House', so instead they go to the other extreme and attach themselves to whoever appears intelligent without considering his ability to lead. My concern isn't just the level of intelligence a candidate has, but also can he get things done, can he turn his ideas into action and I have to admit it, I don't feel that Obama is the best candidate for action. We need a leader, not a high level, abstract thinker. I hope Obama proves me wrong.Anyway, Sarah loves to say the word Obama and has been going around the house saying, 'Obama Mama'. Of course she also likes to say, 'Mama Llama'.
Sam's Fainting Couch
In a box in the basement we found a doll sized fainting couch. Before we could put it in our garage sale, Sarah claimed it for her Beanie Babies collection (also found on the way to our garage sale). Sam has taken to it and loves to carry it around and sit on it.
Sam's Shoe Fetish
Sam seems to have a fascination with other people's shoes. In this picture he is wearing Sarah's shoes. He put them on by himself and climbed up on the box with a very proud smile.
